HOW TO CREATE INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS: DESIGN TIPS
Before I actually show you how to make your own, I thought it might be helpful if I shared some design tips:
- Try to keep your design simple. Just use an icon in the middle of your design, or a keyword that the highlights are for. These designs show up really small on Insta, so less is more!
- Consider the contrast. This is one of the most important aspects when it comes to design. If there isn’t enough contrast between the background and what’s on top of it (an icon or keyword in this instance), then it won’t be clear enough!
- Use a light background. Obviously you can use a dark background if you want! But as the darker colour tends to draw attention easier, it’s better to use that for the icon or text in your Instagram highlight covers.
And now you know the design tips, it’s time to create your Instagram highlight covers!
HOW TO CREATE INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS
Below is a step by step for creating your own highlight covers. It’s super quick and easy to do!
INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS STEP 1: Sign up to Canva
For this tutorial, you need a Canva account.
Canva is a free online design software. Hopefully if you’ve read my other posts like how to create a logo for free, you already have an account.
But if not, you can sign up here. It takes virtually no time to sign up, and it’s a really useful account to have (they offer free templates, icons, photographs, the lot!).
INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS STEP 2: Select “Instagram stories” option
At the top of the Canva homepage where all your designs are shown (you won’t have any if you’re new to Canva, but the homepage is still the same) search for ‘Instagram Story’. Then click the option shown above.
If this option is not showing for you, you can also click the “Custom Dimensions” button at the top right. There, just enter the measurements shown above (1080 pixels width by 1920 pixels height).
But either way works just as well.
INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS STEP 3: Add an icon
A new tab will then open with a blank design ready for you to start working on.
To select an icon for your Instagram highlight cover, on the left hand side select Elements> Graphics> and then click on a graphic to place it on your blank design.
You can search for specific icons at the top, above where all the graphics are listed.
There are hundreds of free graphics to choose from, but there are also some paid for ones listed if you need more choice!
INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS STEP 4: Resize and colour
You can resize the icon by selecting the icon, then clicking on one of the white dots in the corners of the icon, and dragging it inwards to make it smaller.
You’ll also want to change the colour of the icon to match your theme.
You can do this by clicking on the icon, and then clicking on the coloured square at the top left of the canvas (this will only appear once you have selected the icon).
You can then select from a range of colours, or click the + button under the “Document colours” section to choose your own specific colour.
(Top tip: if you have a specific brand colour, you can copy a colour code from other Canva designs or colour codes too from the internet into the colour selection! And if you’re looking for some colour codes to use, check out my free feminine colour palettes).
INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS STEP 5: Center the icon
Once you’ve resized the icon, you can center it by clicking on it and dragging it to the center of the canvas. You will know when it’s central as these handy purple lines that will appear (thanks Canva!).
INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS STEP 6: Change the background
You can change the background of your cover by selecting Background on the left hand side. From there, you can chose from loads of free patterns Canva has to offer, or you can click “+ Solid colour” to make your background one colour.
Again, you can click the + button under Document colours to choose your own specific colour.
USING YOUR OWN IMAGE AS A BACKGROUND
Alternatively, you can use an image or photograph as the background.
To do this, just click Uploads on the left hand side, then click “Upload an image”.
Resize the image so it fits the full canvas, then at the top right select “Position> Backwards”.
This will then send the image you have used to the back, so the icon is in front and the image acts as the background.
INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS STEP 7: Creating multiple
To make sure your icons are all the exact same layout, simply click the “+ Add a new page” button underneath your design. Canva will create a new page with the exact same layout.
You then simply have follow all the steps again to create another cover!
You can repeat this as many times as you like, if you want multiple icons to download together.
INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS STEP 8: Downloading
As Canva is an online software, it will automatically save your designs for you.
But if you want to use your highlight covers immediately, you’ll need to download them so you can add them to Instagram.
To do this, first rename the file. I recommend naming it something like “Instagram stories cover highlights”.
Then at the top right hand side, click Publish> Download, leave settings as they are and click Download.
Your Instagram highlight covers will be downloaded.
You can now upload them to Instagram to use as your cover story highlights!
